Exploring Gate 1 in Human Design: The Gate of Self-Expression

Let your heart bloom in full self-expression, your purpose is to be you.

This is the energy of Gate 1, the Gate of Self-Expression in Human Design, the Gate of Purpose in Quantum Human Design™, The Creative in the I-Ching, and in the Gene Keys it is the shadow of Entropy, the gift of Freshness, and the siddhi of Beauty.

My model for Gate 1 is my mentor and the founder of Quantum Human Design™, Dr. Karen Curry Parker. I am so excited to share not just my own contemplations of this powerful Gate but also her insights from conversation we had this past spring at the Omega Institute.

As Dr. Karen Curry Parker, shared during our conversation, the energy of Gate 1, “...comes from the heart and it's never been about making a small contribution. So I always tell my students when you have the 1-8 you don't want to knit doilies for the church bake sale, right? You want to change the world and it feels like it's something you're supposed to do.”

This is one of the 64 Gates in the landscape of the Human Design system where each Gate in the chart serves a unique role, influencing our traits, behaviors, and interactions with the world. Knowing the full story of Gates can provide powerful guidance for personal growth and self-discovery.

The position of the Planets at the moment of your birth determines whether a Gate is defined (colored in) or undefined (not colored in) in your Chart. ⁠

If a Planet was in a Gate when you were born, you will have that Gate defined. Having a Gate defined means this is an energy you experience consistently as a theme that is part of your life curriculum.

If a Gate is undefined you will still experience the themes of a Gate but it will often be in relationship with others or when a Planet is transiting this gate (as Planetary transits activate the energy of a Gate within all of our charts).

Embracing the Gifts

In Human Design, Gate 1 is a powerful energy center located in the G Center. In the I-Ching this is the Hexagram called “The Creative” and for years I taught classes to help people Cultivate in Creativity which at it’s core are about releasing our ideas of what we “need to do” and simply allowing ourselves to play and discover our innate creativity. We are all born creative, just by being uniquely us.

Authentic Self-Expression… The energy of Gate 1 supports individuals in knowing and expressing their true selves. This can lead to a life where actions, words, and creations are aligned with one's core identity. Gate 1 is part of the individual circuit in Human Design and those with it often find that they will challenge societal norms and inspire others to think differently when using the creative power of Gate 1 just by being their authentic selves.

Creative Power… This gate channels a strong creative force, allowing for the creation of unique and meaningful contributions to the world. This isn't just about art but can be any form of creation that resonates deeply with who you are. You are the canvas on which you paint the story of your life. Or you could be drawn to use a literal canvas. The choice is yours. You are the creative force.

Sense of Purpose… People with this gate defined often have a deep connection to their life purpose and are often on a mission to serve. The secret here is that whatever you do, so long as you root into the authenticity of you, that is your purpose. You are here to shine out brightly and so long as you learn to love yourself and honor the uniqueness of you, you will fulfill your purpose in what you do. As my teacher Dr. Karen Curry Parker shares in her book The Encyclopedia of Quantum Human Design™ , “What you create with your life IS the contribution you give the world.”

Navigating the Shadows

While Gate 1 brings the gift of connecting deeply with one’s purpose and the power to inspire others through creative self-expression, it also presents challenges that require self-awareness and courage to overcome. As I often tell my clients that in order to live in our gifts, we must first see our shadows.

Pressure to Create… Sometimes those with Gate 1 can feel an internal pressure to be constantly creative or unique. As if they need to constantly be creating the next best thing so much so that they get overwhelmed and feel they are failing if they aren't always producing something new. So please pause, take a breath and remind yourself… I will create what I am here to create, there is time. And then maybe take a shower or a walk, isn’t that where we often get unstuck?

Fear of Not Fulfilling Purpose… There can be a fear of failing in one's life mission or of not living up to one's potential. This can lead to anxiety or a sense of purposelessness if the individual feels disconnected from their creative flow. I think we’ve all experienced this at one time or another as we are given a certain amount of time here and there is often an emphasis on “making your mark”. The truth is YOU are your mark. You are your purpose. The more you strip away the “you should be, could be, etc” that you may have picked up during your life and follow the energy of what truly lights you up… well that is you living your purpose. You are here TO BE YOU.

Hiding from Visibility… Because the purpose of Gate 1 can feel so significant, some individuals might hide their true selves, fearing that their expression might be seen as too much or too self-centered. So if you have this gate and find yourself holding back, ask yourself, “who is this truly serving?” Because the people who are out there waiting for what you are here to create want to see you. They want to hear you. They are waiting for you. Go out there and share your inspiring self.

Finding Balance

The model for this illustration is my teacher and the founder of Quantum Human Design™ Dr. Karen Curry Parker, a luminary in the field of personal development.

When I began studying with her in 2023 one of the things that attracted me was her clear message of unconditional love and in our conversation I found out this isn’t just a coincidence; it’s her purpose.

Karen revealed, “I was told by my spirit guides when I was four years old, “go forth and teach only love” and I feel like that is also the 1-8 (channel). The 1-8 says that the contribution is love.”

Gate 1 is located in the G Center and connects to Gate 8 in the Throat Center to create the 1-8 channel. The G Center, also know as the Identity Center in Quantum Human Design™ is our center for identity, purpose and direction.

This week the sun was transiting Gate 1 from November 4-9, 2024… it was also the US Presidential Election and no matter where you stood I think we can all agree it has been a very charged week. And interestingly for many it has also been a hugely clarifying week.

A week where many have looked into their hearts to determine how they want to move forward.

I think what Karen related to me can help shine a light on why so many of us found ourselves digging deep this week. She shared, “The (1-8) channel is the creative role model and it feels like an obligation to stay true to the creative self-expression because it is what will change the world. Because if you compromise on it, then who's going to lead the charge?”

Karen expanded on her own experience with Gate 1 over the years, “With maturity, the wisdom of the (Gate) 1 is tempered and the wildness of needing to set everything on fire with it is gone.There's a lot more awareness of the value of the contribution and really the value of my heart.

Being able to gauge and assess that this is the right environment for me to share this part of myself. Because if it's not the right environment, I'm not going to waste my energy and my effort and my creative expression.

Because it's too beautiful, and I really think beautiful is the right word. It's just too beautiful to put in front of people who don't see it or get it or criticize it. Or sometimes feel jealous of it. And so there's a lot of discernment that has happened with that maturing process.”

Personally I found myself sharing a LOT of my heart with people this week.

I don’t have Gate 1 defined in my chart but I do have Gate 8 located in the throat center which is about having the ability to speak your heart into the world as your gate to creative self expression and purpose. And this week as we transited Gate 1 I have been doing that more than I have in a long time.

In fact, this week I have been able to clearly receive that this is my purpose:

I am here to be a voice for love, understanding and unity in our world.

The work I do is to help people deeply understand themselves so that they can heal themselves, love themselves and then expand out to love each other.

Because a person who fully loves, does not seek to change or control another person.

When we stop trying to control each other with fear and embrace our individuality with love, the world becomes an amazing constellation of brilliant beings.

Or as it says on the back of my Quantum Human Design™ sweatshirt from Karen,

“You are a once-in-a-lifetime-cosmic-event. YOU MATTER.”

Are you fully expressing your authentic self in your daily life and creative endeavors?
Where in your life are you compromising or holding back your self-expression, and what would it look like to fully embrace your creativity?
What fears or doubts might be holding you back from sharing your unique gifts with the world?
How would you define your life purpose, and are you honoring it through your actions and choices?

To Inspire

When I sat in contemplation of Gate 1 these words dropped in, a reminder of the power within this gate.

Let your heart bloom in full self-expression,

Your purpose is to be you.

The sweet nectar of your true creative nature,

attracts those here to receive your nourishment.

Flower in the authentic entirety of you,

and inspire others into florescence too.
