Exploring Gate 38 in Human Design: The Gate of the Fighter
When you root into a vision of what you want to build and are willing to fight for what you believe, you inspire others to do the same. Gate 38 the Gate of the Fighter, in Human Design embodies the energy of a revolutionary. In Quantum Human Design™ it is the Gate of The Visionary, and in the Gene Keys it is the shadow of Struggle, the gift of Perseverance, and the siddhi of Honour.

This week as the sun transited gate 38 from 12/31/23 to 1/5/24 you may have felt activated by the energy of this gate because even if gate 38 is normally undefined in your chart, when the sun (or another planet) transits this gate, all of us have this energy activated in our charts.
Gate 38 is a powerful gate that at its core has the ability to truly transform the world as it drives a person to challenge authorities when they see something that needs to be changed for the health of our world. With that it makes total sense that Greta Thunberg has this Gate as her conscious sun.
Are you ready to dive deeper? Let’s go…
Embracing the Gifts
Situated in the Root Center, Gate 38 is represented by the hexagram called “Opposition” in the I Ching. Gate 38 serves as a rooting energy that gives us the strength to hold true to our vision, even in the face of Opposition.
Determination…Those with Gate 38 have an innate determination and resilience. They possess a powerful drive to overcome obstacles and accomplish their goals, often demonstrating unwavering persistence in their pursuits.
Leadership… Individuals with this gate tend to possess natural leadership qualities. They inspire others through their determination and ability to rally people around a cause or objective, motivating them to take action.
Courage… Courage is a defining trait of Gate 38. These individuals are not afraid to confront challenges head-on, fearlessly tackling issues that might intimidate others.
Strategic Thinking… Those with the Gate of the Fighter instinctively know what battles are theirs to fight. They often possess the ability to see the bigger picture and devise effective plans to achieve their desired outcomes.
Navigating the Shadows
Embracing the gifts while being mindful of the potential pitfalls can help those with the Gate of the Fighter navigate life more effectively, fostering personal growth and understanding in the process.
Stubbornness… While determination is a gift, it can sometimes lead a person to dig in when they instead need to move on. Individuals with Gate 38 might become so fixed on their goals that they resist adapting to new information or changing circumstances.
Conflict-Prone… The fighting spirit inherent in this gate can sometimes lead to conflict, especially if the energy is not channeled constructively. They might find themselves in unnecessary battles or clashes due to their strong-willed nature.
Burnout… The relentless pursuit of their objectives might lead to burnout. Sometimes, individuals with Gate 38 might push themselves too hard, neglecting self-care in their quest for achievement. Those with this gate really need to make time for tension release, which could be in the form of meditation, yoga, hikes, or whatever helps release the pressure and recenter you.
Need for Recognition… Gate 38 is a projected gate which means that those with it need to be invited to share their passion and if they are not they can push people away from their vision. Think of Greta Thunberg’s passion and how those who are with her are passionately so, but those who are not are often repelled by her. As a projected channel there might be a deep desire for recognition or validation for their efforts and if this acknowledgment is lacking, it could lead to bitterness.
Finding Balance
In Quantum Human Design™ this is the gate of the Visionary which I love because the Visionary is someone who holds the vision of what is possible and roots into that vision with a stubbornness that allows them to ascend past obstacles with sheer determination.
“There must be a reason to exist, a purpose, and something to love that elevates struggle beyond simply surviving” - Ra Uru Hu
My friend Lizzy, who is the model for this artwork, has Gate 38 in her chart 4 times along with the partner Gate 28 to form the full Channel of Struggle. During her life Lizzy has often had to learn things the “hard way” and one big thing that Lizzy fought through was a 10-year eating disorder. Her journey led her to finally find peace with her body.
Now Lizzy passionately coaches other women to rebel against the main stream diet culture and reclaim their own body confidence using a combination of nutrition, exercise and mindset that she learned from her own struggle.
She is now a warrior and rebel in a sea of folks who would love for us to feel bad about ourselves and profit off our pain.
This is the mark of those with Gate 38, they are fierce and stubborn for a reason. They know what they believe in and they know if they fight for it they can bring real change into the world.
Are you ready to activate the power of Gate 38 in your life?
Here are a few questions to contemplate as you do…
To Contemplate
Whether Gate 38 is defined or undefined in your chart I invite you to contemplate the following to deepen your understanding of how this energy shows up in your life and what you might do to further activate it.
What meaning do you find in your struggles?
Can you use your struggles to fire you up for what you want to fight for?
Do you trust life so that even when it is hard, you can find the meaning?
Do you sometimes fight for no reason? Is there anything you should let go of?
What do you really want to create in your life? Are you willing to fight for it?
If you knew you were fully supported and anything was possible, what would you fight for?

to inspire all who behold your blaze.
Stretching upward with perseverance,
you stand tall.
