Cherry Blossoms and Flow

Welcome to my studio, today I wanted to show you a little bit of how I go from inspiration to artwork. Lately, most of my artwork is inspired simply by sitting with flowers and contemplating them.

I’ll often start with an initial study, using water colors and painting in an intuitive, free-flowing way. Most of my paintings aren’t planned aside from me, having a hazy image in my mind of what I want to create.

I find as a paint the flower, an image that connects to a story or a figure will come to me.

This cherry blossom piece started with a rumination about how cherry blossom petals simply release with such grace, and that led me to think about the Ksepana Mudra which is specifically for releasing. At the time I created this I was in the midst of moving through a big release in my own life, and all those things swirled together into the final piece.

Does the person who looks at this artwork need to know all that?

No. They may come to this piece and find their own meaning… and that is the beauty of art.

We all find our own way.
